Strip Your Business Down to the Foundation to Increase Profitability

I recently began talking with a prospective client about helping them become more profitable.  As we talked, it became evident that their entire organization needed to be stripped down to the foundation, then rebuilt from the ground up.

At the store level their payroll was out of whack, they had opened stores in far-flung regions which left them impossible to manage and they most likely didn’t have a person with the right experience running the stores.

On the corporate front, they built the team for the long-haul.  While the thought was admirable, it’s sinking the company because the stores can’t support the overhead.  Additionally, they are using a specific category of merchandise as a loss-leader to drive traffic (a no-no given that they company is only working with keystone margins).

Are your expenses in line?

I’m intrigued by this company I’m taling with because I think there is opportunity across every department.  The low-hanging fruit has now fallen off the tree and is rotting on the ground — that’s how much opportunity they have.

Here’s a few benchmarks and thoughts on expenses:

Your store level payroll ideally should be 15% of sales.  Hit this mark and you’re doing great.  If your payroll is more, then you need to look at the types of employees you have and how they’re scheduled.  Awhile back I wrote a post on the subject.  Check it out here and here.
Your rent should be about 6% of sales.  While it’s tough to renegotiate rent in the middle of a lease, it’s something you should be aware of for a future location or a renegotiation after the lease term ends.
Marketing should run 2-4% of sales.  If you concept is new, then you should target the higher 4%percent.  If you’re established, try to head toward 2%.  Sometimes you may even need to go above the 4% to drive traffic.  Try to resist the urge as the return on investment usually isn’t there.
Savings on insurance premiums are usually out there.  With one company I am working with, we went after all-new insurance in every category – health, worker’s comp., property/casualty/liability. By shopping the insurance, we saved 22% on health care, 32% on worker’s comp. and increased our property/casualty/liability coverage by 50% with only a 16% increase in premiums.
Watch out for supplies.  Nearly every company I’ve worked for and worked with is “oversupplied”.  There are 40 rolls of paper towels, 100 rolls of toilet paper, boxes and boxes and boxes of staples, tape, pens, etc.  We’ve been able to reduce supplies expense by up to 50% simply by keeping less on hand.  And take note of where you’re buying supplies.  One company I’m working with makes the trip to a warehouse club to save money on supplies, but we’re paying an employee $13 in mileage every time he goes, negating the savings he’s getting by going to the warehouse club.  Factor in his hourly wage and we’re actually losing money versus if he just went to the local grocery or drug store.
Shipping.  This is another area where costs usually can be greatly reduced.  We’ve turned into a “gotta have it overnight” society when that usually just isn’t the case.  Ship via ground, or 3 day to save a considerable amount of money.  Again, you can usually reduce your shipping up to 50%.

7 Lively Ways To Finance Your Business And How To Record In Your Books

Today I found this helpful article on CNNMoney
about ways to finance a startup. Though the ways of financing is
familiar to most, I would guess that many entrepreneurs don’t know how to
record this accurately in the books. It could be classified as an asset,
investment, owner’s equity or loan.

Here are the seven ways, and I will explain how to classify in your business’ Chart of Accounts.

1. Bootstrapping. That is simply using your own
money to finance the business. You can account for this by classifying
this as an equity account and calling it Owner’s Investment.
However, if you “loan” the business funds periodically by paying for
expenses that you want to be reimburse for, then you should also add a
liability account called “What The Business Owes Me“.

2. Friends and Family. This could be a loan or
investment depending on the agreement you set with your people. It is
good policy to have this designated in writing with the terms for
repayment or if the person have an equity stake in your business. If
this indeed is a loan, the accounting for this to set up a liability
account called Friend/Family Loan. If it an investment, then set up an equity account for this and called Friend/Family Investment. Then you also would want to set up a corresponding Friend/Family Draw account to note payment of profits back to them.

3. Banks. Classify as a loan. Depending on the
terms it is either a current or long term liability. If it is actually
a credit card as oppose to a line of credit, then set it up as such.

4. Grants. If you are diligent and lucky enough to
receive a grant, then it is a boon to your business. Classify it as an
asset and tell your friends. Grant awards are great publicity!

5. Angels and 6. Venture capital.
The accounting is similar for both (an equity account for the
investment.) However, the difference is whether Angel Investor or
Venture Capitalist is a partner or member of your business and how is
profit/capital gains paid to them.

7. Customers and suppliers. This can be a bit
tricky. Are you customers/client merely referring new business to you
or are they official partners in your business? If it just a referral,
then an agreement should be drawn to specify the percentage of the
referred sale your customer/supplier brings to the business. Classify
the sale as referral/commission income and the payout as a commission
expense. If you customer/supplier is more like a business partner, then
you have to determine what their role is and what is their member or
partner draw. That has to be clearly described in contract terms.

For instance, the permits and licenses must all be legit, the background checks of security personnel must all be reviewed and analyzed, the firearms and ammunition must all be licensed and the entire firm must be secure. It is important to practice security within the training/business compound itself. Everything within the office walls is considered confidential and the potential customers and clientele must be given the impression that they are in safe hands with your company.
Consider the financing for your business. Be able to set a list of goals, services, and an overall rough draft on your plans for the company. It is from this initial documentation that one is able to assess a proper allocation of funds. Initially if you do not have the funds on hand you may always resort to financial institutions or banks to aid you in your needs. Just make sure that you only loan out what you are absolutely sure you can pay back. A common problem with young business owners is that when the company does not work out as they expected, they land in an extreme financial deficit and debt.
For all your important and confidential information you will not only need a secure building and workplace but also a secure database. It is of utmost importance to secure all the information you will be gathering from your clients. Having a professional Computer Engineer and IT staff at your disposal to keep things at optimum efficiency is very essential.

The apple is a powerful multibillion dollar industry with a $10 billion value as of 2005. The market is set to increase as the world slowly turns towards turning to healthier and greener foods.The United States’ apple market has experienced a revival when the Green Revolution began, the beginning of the healthier foods campaign. Starting an apple farming business is basically good for people with real hard patience and some good money to borrow, or if you have the money, the apple farming business is a “slowly but surely” growing business where the first returns may take some time but the returns would last longer.
Apple Farming’s Business Clients
The primary clients of the apple business are the direct consumers. However, some apple companies prefer to associate with grocery  companies or supermarkets. In the past, the direct consumer approach wasn’t as successful as those companies which associated with the big companies. However as the Green Revolution produced a side effect on the farming business which we call the “Organic Produce is Better” way, the companies which sold apples directly to consumers had an increase of sales. This was due to the belief of the public that what they buy directly from the farmers was fresh. Although this was misconstrued, it gave the direct sellers a chance to up their ante at surviving the business world.
Stores and supermarkets, because of the financial crisis, are now in dire straits to make ends meet. These were the original big consumers in the apple business. Now, as stores close, if an apple business sells exclusively to the stores and supermarkets, they could end up with less sales and big profit  losses. Therefore it is advisable that if you start a business start small and sell it directly to the customers.
Startup Cost in the Apple Farming Business
Considering the steep drop in land prices, it may seem cheap to start the business. But consider that the business entails crop machines, tractors, workers, and such. You might want to budget wisely, as you need to do a balancing act to keep all of these factors intact. There are hidden costs too in the business. Consider the machines you need for separating the roots and twigs and for those cleaning the apples. You might also considering training your workers in basic apple farming. This may take some time. But time may both be your friend and enemy, as it takes a long time for the apples to grow, which could mean a delay of the return of investment. But it can be your friend as the whole time it takes for the business to have the return of investment is longer and better than other businesses.

In India apple farms are basically in Jammu kashmir.Himachal pradesh.and Utra khand. Apple needs minimum 700 hrs of chilling temperature. Chilling temperature is less than 10* C duting winters. But recently In Himachal pradesh a variety is developed which can be grown in lower hills also. mean apples which require less chilling period. So this variety can be grown in northern states of India which are under cold spell from December to february.
