To start an education consulting firm, keep in mind that you must have a good background in the education available in the country.Keep in mind what your customer may want from you, in terms of schools available in the area and by what principles they teach by. To be a consultant is to be a specialist at a specific field from which your services are required.
The type of education that is available may not be the type of education that your client desires. In this case keeping a list of other options is necessary to set up your contingency plans. Make sure that your relationship with the client develops over time as you will get to know more about what the persons principles are all about. Consultants are hired because of their expertise and you cannot show them anything less than their expectations. Study education consultancy and visit schools in the area to learn more about what makes them different or similar to one another.
You must clearly state what you can detect and resolve, to your client. Your job is to solve the issues placed in front of you so it is necessary to state your limitations (if any to your client). This will also give people the idea that you are very realistic about the things that you can and cant solve. This goes hand in hand with presenting yourself professionally. Continue educating yourself with the local education and even expand more on your knowledge of the subject. Since you are just starting you may want to offer free services to your first few customers, until of course you get the hang of it. This will also enable you to broaden your client list as your reputation will be presented in a good light, especially if you are successful with your free services to other customers.
Once you learn the basics on what it takes to be a consultant then you may start financing your firm. A database is essential to keep track of all your clients, their issues and specific needs so dont hold back on the quality stuff here. You may plan on starting the firm yourself or have associates with you. Whatever you decide it is important that all are briefed with regards on the firms policies on how to handle things and situations. Bear in mind that it is better to have only a few associates yet well educated and learned ones, rather than have many that are inexperienced.
Be able to compare to the competition. You may want to review or reflect on other consulting firms, even if they are not the ones specific to any field. This is because there are so many people out there that may be using the same techniques or strategies as you. Their failure or success will give you an idea of whether or not you too should engage in that particular task.
To get people to hire you, you must promote your services accordingly. This is where the free introductory services come in. This is a make or break stage so even if you make no money out of the case you should still give it your all since it will be able to set an example t the public market, and this example needs to be positive to get people to your firm. Publish an advertisement in a newspaper, magazine or local gazette.
