In a new marketing strategy, technology giant Microsoft Corp. recently hired a former Wal-Mart executive to lead the company to the retail business. In an effort to compete with Apple’s playbook retail stores, the Microsoft announced to start from a “small number” of stores before jumping into a full blown nationwide retail business.

Technology giant Microsoft Corp hired a former Wal-Mart executive who can lead the company towards retail business. With this new marketing strategy, the company attempts to compete with Apple’s playbook.David Porter, who spent 25 years in retail giant Wal-Mart, was hired by Microsoft as the new corporate vice president of retail stores. Porter’s most recent job was DreamWorks Animation SKG product distribution chief.
In a statement, Porter said that Microsoft is a viable company for retail business, adding that with properly managing this new venture, the retail stores can attract more customers if it can provide the best “shopping experience”.
According to Microsoft spokesman, the company will start first on “small number” of stores before jumping into a full blown nationwide retail business, adding that Porter’s first responsibility is when to build the pioneer stores and decide where are the most strategic locations to put these.
In a site near Microsoft’s main office in Redmond, Washington, there is already mockup design which shows how the new retail stores would look like.
In 2001, Apple first attempted to enter into the retail business which proves to be highly successfully as the strategy help the company to sell its products including iPod music, Mac computers, and iPhones which have become consumers’ favorites.
