The complaint, filed before the Manhattan federal court, said that Coca-Cola’s advertisement “viciously attacks Gatorade” by stating that this beverage is incomplete unlike its rival’s Powerade.

According to Pepsi, Coca-Cola should stop its misleading print advertisement which shows a tagline below a Gatorade bottle that says it is “incomplete” unlike the Powerade which has all the power-boosting ingredients.

Meanwhile, Gatorade was considered to be the most popular sports drink that it controlled more than 77 percent of the market last year, according to a report by Beverage Digest. Coca-Cola’s Powerade, on the other hand, controlled 22 percent of the sports drink market in the same year.

The popularity of Gatorade has helped Pepsi’s to keep its finances afloat despite the drastic decline of sales of its soft-drink products as healthier beverages such as bottled ice tea and fruit juices have entered into the consumer market.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Coca-Cola spokesman Scott Williamson said they are “prepared to defend their product Powerade.

Meanwhile, Pepsi said that its rival beverage giant is making a false claim by saying that Gatorade is inferior, adding that Coca-Cola should recall its Powerade products which bears the “deceptive” labels.
