Give a Little Here, Get a Little There

Give a Little Here, Get a Little There

Many people go into business for themselves so they can call the shots. They saw bad decisions being made by their employers and knew they could do better. Perhaps they bristled at getting direction that they didn’t need. When they got out on their own, they found a business world that was maybe less black and white than they had imagined.

Usha Sekar offered a good post called Learn to love the gray. Yep, you will have to make compromises, and some things won’t be exactly the way you wanted them to be. But what I liked most in this post was:

It is going to be ‘give a little here, get a little there’, and you have to not only accept, but, as the guardian of the team spirit, you have to enthusiastically champion something that is less than what you originally hoped for.

As the guardian of the team spirit, put on a bright smile, and learn to love Mr. In-Between.

Treat Your Customers Well (Take a lesson from Julia Roberts)

Treat Your Customers Well (Take a lesson from Julia Roberts)

In yesterday’s post, it was determined that dressing rooms are places that women generally dread, even hate.

The message that most dressing rooms send to shoppers is this: We don’t care whether you buy anything or not. You are not important enough for anybody who works in this store to take time to assist you. You’re on your own. And, don’t steal anything because we know that is your real reason for going into the dressing room.

My contention is that retailers could net more sales if they would stop treating their dressing rooms as (a) an afterthought and (b) a place where criminals go to hide goods in their purses.

Here are some suggestions as to how to upgrade the state of your dressing rooms:

1. Paint them a bright, happy color.

2. Put in soft lighting.

3. Place a three-way mirror close by so that customers trying on clothes have only to step just outside the dressing room to get a full view of themselves in your clothes.

4. Add more hooks. And after you’re done, add more hooks.

5. Talk to your customers who are trying on clothes. Use some of the following phrases.

May I bring you anything else?

Could you use a different size in that?

Did you see that other rack of white blouses over near the blue jeans?

Are those jeans fitting? Did you see the new stretch jeans near the back of the store?

That outfit looks really nice with this sweater.

6. Finally, assign one employee on every shift the responsibility of helping customers who are trying on clothes. Train them to not only assist the customer, but also to be polite and treat that customer as if she is going to spend $500 in your store. Who knows? With the proper assistance, she just might.

When all else fails, make your employees watch the two scenes in the movie Pretty Woman, when (a) the Julia Roberts character — still wearing her streetwalker clothes — is shunned and treated rudely by two snotty clerks; (b) she returns, dressed to the nines, looking fabulous and loaded down with shopping bags to tell the two rude clerks that if they are working on commission they made a very big mistake when they shunned her.

Is It Time to Hang Up Our Cell Phones?

Is It Time to Hang Up Our Cell Phones?

Driving and cell phones don’t mix. If you don’t believe me, ask professors at the University of Utah, who completed a study recently that showed that people talking on cell phones while driving, either with or without headsets, were more impaired than drivers with a .08 alcohol level, which in most states is legally drunk. In 1997, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that drivers talking on cell phones were four times more likely to be involved in an accident.

Ask members of juries who have delivered big-blow verdicts to companies across America. In 2001, a jury ordered Dykes Industries of Arkansas to pay $21 million when an employee making a business call on his cell phone struck and permanently disabled a 78-year old woman. A few days after the verdict, the case was settled for $16.2 million.

Most of us have a story of a near miss from someone talking on a cell phone. Most police reports now have a box indicating the use of a cell phone. Cell phone use can make a bad liability picture worse, or make a no-liability accident one of comparative negligence, which opens your organization to a percentage of liability, not the case absent the cell phone use. Even if employees deny they were on the phone at the time of the collision, in any serious accident savvy attorneys subpoena cell phone records to determine if cell-phone use was a factor in the crash. A growing safety issue, some states are enacting legislation to reduce the number of accidents.

How can organizations shield themselves from claims? There is no sure-fire method, but the best way to insulate your organization from liability is with a zero-tolerance policy prohibiting driving and talking on cell phones. Make sure employees read, sign and date the agreement. Restrictions should include the use of hands-free devices, since studies show that it is the conversation itself, not the motor skills used to dial or hold the phone that is distracting.

Your policy should include guidelines for safer cell phone use such as

Allow voice mail to handle the call until the employee can safely pull off to return the call.

Turn the phone off while driving to avoid the temptation to check caller identification and risk taking the call.

Ask a passenger to make the call.

Define penalties for infractions, including those magic words, “Up to and including termination.”

If your organization adopts a cell phone policy, this may not shield you completely. You must vigorously enforce the policy and discipline employees who violate the prohibitions. Tie infractions to pay raises, as all safety performance issues should be. Senior management must respect the cell-phone ban and model appropriate behavior to their employees or subordinates will ignore the policy, as well.

If you ban cell phones, expect a great deal of resistance, especially from employees who spend long hours in their vehicles, those in urban areas where traffic stalls and from those who cover large geographic regions by car. It’s not always easy for an organization to do the right thing. However, with each new study and jury verdict, it’s becoming clearer—it’s time to hang up on cell phones.

Home » Business Tips » Markets that benefit from the deep drawing stainless steel process
January 20, 2017 Frank Bullock Business Tips
Technology has advanced a great deal and there are numerous processes and techniques that can be used in a more time efficient and beneficial manner. Take deep drawing stainless steel services. Now these are considered top of the line when it comes to tech processes and a large number of people have noticed the biggest advantage of all, the less amount of wastage. When realizing stainless steel parts through other methods, a lot of wastage is created and the production cost tends to go high. This is something that can be changed in the case of deep drawing. Plus, the design is sustainable and most importantly robust. Still, why is this important? Why does it matter that deep drawing is advantageous? Well, there are several markets that make great use of the parts obtained in this manner. Here are three examples that will reveal the importance of this process, especially when it comes to parts.

The medical field

Everyone wants to know that there is a great medical system and that there are solutions for all issues. However, in order to accomplish this goal attention to details is necessary. The parts used in the making of various medical devices are essential. These need to be robust and sustainable, as they need to last a long time. Deep drawing services are important because they offer the manufacturer exactly the parts they need to make strong devices that will function properly and last a long time.

The industrial market

It is essential to mention that the industrial field makes great use of this process. Parts obtained through this process are greatly appreciated, especially since they are made from various materials. You will notice that in this field, parts are successfully obtained from copper, brass, stainless steel, aluminum, nickel. What is even better, when using this process there are other services that are added, services that can bring significant value. For instance, through deep drawing, surface coating or soldering are added to the part making process. The industrial field is constantly developing and changing, so the need for parts is high.

The commercial domain

There are plenty uses for deep drawing made parts in the commercial field. Just like in the industrial market, the demand is high. Plus, the variety of materials from which these parts are made is also large. For instance, in the commercial market, you will discover parts made from nickel, brass, copper, stainless steel and several others. The good news is that deep drawing can manufacture parts from all these materials without encountering any issues. So, this process becomes a good choice for this market.

Deep drawing is a process that is increasing in terms of popularity and it is natural to be so, given the fact that it can create precise parts, from a variety of materials and diminishes wastage. Find a trustworthy provider that can help you by offering professional deep drawing services. As you can see there are plenty market that can be serviced, so you should find good use for these parts.
