The Man The Legend John Osher, Inventor of the Spin Brush Part II
John Osher and his design team had conceived of a potentially great idea. How did they go about bringing it to life?
The task was accomplished in a series of prototypes. We first built a bread board model. The bread-board prototype must work like the product, but doesnt have to look like it. It needs to perform the action in question and test fundamental issues, like battery power length. Once we had created an effective bread-board model, we began working on what I call the looks like, works like prototype. This prototype need not look completely finished, but should further test the execution of the idea.
Designing a looks like, works like prototype is a great way to discover potential issues and solve problems. For example, the first bristles John used on the brush became pointed sideways after two weeks of use. He then made the brush oscillate, rather than rotate. More bristles were added to increase the effectiveness of the brush.
Dont think that these changes occurred overnight, or the process came together magically.
Designing a works like, looks like prototype took around a year, probably. There was a time in the middle we were going to quit. It just wasnt working out. But we continued on. When I look at the Spin Brush today, I laugh at how primitive the first was. But it was an on-going process.
Its a good thing he didnt give up. John has enjoyed the type of lucrative success most inventors cant even comprehend. And most of it is due to his persistence in demonstrating that the Spin Brush was a desirable product.
Thankfully, I was able to utilize many of the contacts I had established with the Spin Pop in creating the Spin Brush. But I knew I needed to prove that the product was of benefit. We performed market tests in Meyers stores in Michigan and Ohio the Spin Brush sold about seven per day. The leading electrical toothbrush at the time sold two a week.
Osher also ran tests with consumers directly. The brush received the highest customer satisfaction and support, ever. It was this specific type of evidence that eventually led Osher to sign with Proctor and Gamble.
Osher recognizes how lucky he is.
The whole process went remarkably well. I invested about a million and half dollars across the course of several years. Was it worth the stress? Id say yes, he says with a smile.
The Home Depot Foundation just announced that it will donate $30 million in financial and in-kind support, technical resources and training to establish a foundation of green building expertise for Habitat for Humanity International.
The initiative will provide funding and resources to help make a minimum of 5,000 homes built by Habitat affiliates more energy efficient and sustainable.
The Home Depot Foundations Partners in Sustainable Building program will provide energy-efficient and sustainable building resources for approximately 17 percent of single- and multi-family homes built by Habitat over the next five years.
And, reports Habitat for Humanity, building a home to these standards can create significant savings in annual energy bills for families who live in Habitat-built homes.
Well, all stores are not fortunate enough to have foundations, but perhaps there is something your shop can donate to a green cause in your community.
You and your employees could participate in a community-wide clean-up project. If yours is a garden store, you could donate seeds to a community garden. If there are Habitat homes going up in your community, perhaps you could take coffee and doughnuts to the workers one morning. Every little bit helps.

I recently delivered a program to executives on persuasion in business. Thats where this conversation was mentioned as an example of an element that impacts persuasion. One of the components of persuasion is credibility. Your appearance directly impacts your credibility. When you are more credible, you are more persuasive. What many people dont realize is that the people you meet make quick decisions about your credibility just by observing what you wear.
I showed the audience some photos of workers in different attire and asked for some quick judgments. Suits and long sleeves are perceived as more powerful than short sleeved shirts and a skirt. Thats what the audience found. Heres how it works. When you show more skin, the perception is that you have less power. When you show less skin the perception is that you have more power. Cleavage, obviously falls into the less powerful category. So what were these women at the bank thinking? Who knows.
Im not much of a prude, but it seems to me in business where were working harder than ever, that its a good idea to leverage everything you can in your favor. Appearance is just one of those areas. If you think people wont notice your attire, youre wrong. If you think they dont talk you are really out of the loop. I know of one situation where a female executive dresses quite provocatively. (Think see-though blouses.) She often meets with male executives. When this highly visible woman (pun intended) meets with one executive, his assistant will tell her boss that he has a meeting with the stewardess. Any reference to this female executive is met with the assistant miming a flight attendant doing the safety announcement on the airplane and pointing to the exits fore and aft. Could you imagine being so ridiculed without your knowledge in an executive office? Yup. People do talk.
How much effort do you put into the selection of your wardrobe? If its not much, you may want to rethink that. You might consider showing less skin. If not, youre going to have people talking about you. Ill make a prediction. There will be a lot of executive assistants telling their bosses to enjoy the view.
