EQ Tips from Chickens Part II

EQ Tips from Chickens Part II

And now the part you’ve anxiously been waiting for:

Part II of the First-Ever Top Ten Business EQ Tips You Can Learn From Chickens.

(Just to refresh your memory, in Part I we discussed Thinking Outside the Coop, Some People Never Change, and Generally Speaking, the Sky Does Not Fall In.) Today, the tips are:

4) Don’t Muddy Your Own Water

We raised our chicks inside, in a big cardboard box with a heat lamp on it.  Once we moved the hens to the outside, I soon discovered that whenever I put a bowl of water on the ground,  the hens scratch dirt into it. I have a friend who says they do it by mistake, but I swear they want to make mud-pies. Whatever the motivation, the birds wreck their water and then they whine about being thirsty.

Human Lesson: As the saying goes, don’t soil your own nest. Learn the art of “self mastery,” so that you’re not governed by emotional impulses. Be honest, clear (and legal) in your financial matters, so that you don’t get in trouble down the line. Be mindful of your reputation in the community. I.e., don’t engage in fowl play.

5) Be adaptable

 Chicken behavior: See #4, above.

Human Lesson: One of the hallmarks of emotional intelligence is adaptability, or being able to respond to changing conditions, mandates, or information without flipping out—or, conversely, without doing the same old, same old thing in hopes that it will work.  (Definition of insanity: “Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.”) So when the chickens scratched water into their waterer? I moved the waterer onto a shelf in the hen house.

 Problem solved.

6) Mind the pecking order

Chicken behavior: There’s a reason “pecking order” is called “pecking order.” Chickens work out strict hierarchies within their flocks. The bird at the top creates and enforces that order by literally pecking the other birds (and chasing them, mounting them, squawking at them, and, sometimes, scratching them). It’s ugly to watch, but once that order is worked out, life in the poultry yard is fairly serene.

Human lesson: I’m not going to say that we should all obey the chains of command with slavish dedication. But it’s good to be mindful of who’s who and to treat those people with respect. It’s especially good for small business owners – who, as a breed, tend to be independent, even renegade-ish at times – to be mindful of professional hierarchies. Ever seen a freelancer or consultant suddenly turn sullen, churlish, angry or otherwise just kind of wierd? It happens a lot and it’s not all that productive. Be creative, think outside the coop, nourish your entrepreneurial spirit — but learn how to work within the flock, too.

Next Up: Four more EQ lessons to be learned from our feathered friends — including a quote from Henry Ford, who was not, as we all know, a bird brain.

The Business Case for Wireless Network Security

The Business Case for Wireless Network Security

I was at a client’s office today doing some network reconfiguration and I noticed that their wireless access point was wide open.  I suggested that they let me lock it down and they said no.  Apparently, the perception is that the ability to get on the network easily is more important that implementing security.  The irony is that it’s this freedom that makes it so easy to hack.

In order to understand the issue, you have to understand the risks.  Then assign a value to those risks – if this happened, then what would it cost you both in terms of repairs and lost information or resources?  Then prioritize based on likelihood of occurrence and cost.  That’s pretty much it.

So what can happen?  Someone could hop on your network to steal bandwidth?  Do you want to share the bandwidth that you’re paying for?  If your employees work slower, then what is that costing you?  If a hacker uses your network to attack someone else, then chances are it will get tracked back to your network and not to his computer.  This may make you responsible for the attack.

If someone gets onto your WLAN, then they might as well attack some workstations and servers while they’re at it.  They could steal data.  If you don’t think that the data is worth anything, then what if they crash a workstation or two?  How much are you going to pay your employees even if they can’t work?  What if someone has their daily call sheet on their PC, a hacker takes it down intentionally or unintentionally, and now they can’t make their sales calls?  If they lose those sales, then you can assign a dollar value to the downtime.

Now that you understand the value of wireless security, come back tomorrow and I’ll tell you how to implement it.

When an employee quits what will you counter-offer?

When an employee quits what will you counter-offer?

It looked like the week was
off to a great start until a really valuable employee came into your office to
announce their resignation. Panic sets in with visions of covering the
workload, lost sales, production declines or disappointed customers. Instinct
and defense guide you to offer the employee a nice fat raise to stay. The
employee stays and everyone’s happy, right?
Maybe.

 Don’t make that
counter-offer so quickly. I have rarely seen counter-offers work as an
effective long term solution.

 Whether the employee started
the job hunt or took a call from a head hunter they have just interviewed for,
and accepted a new position. It’s exciting to anticipate a fresh opportunity.
Long before they spread the word it’s likely that they emotionally resigned.

 The extra money may tempt
them into staying and keep them happy for a while, but will you give them a 20%
raise next year?  When news leaks out
about the windfall are you prepared to continue this precedent when the next
person quits?

 Managers eager to
counter-offer forget to delve into the reasons for the resignation.  It may not be all about the money there could
be other factors that additional cash won’t change.

 Take time to identify the
reasons behind the move and the potential impact of a counter-offer. A more
reasoned response could include some job changes or perks that don’t add to
base pay. You may also shake the person’s hand, wish them well and make a
reservation for the farewell lunch.

 Whatever you do don’t bad
mouth another employer, negotiate endlessly or diminish the employee’s value in
any way. It’s a small world you might work together again and it could be at
another company.

A bridal boutique provides bridal gowns, shoes, accessories, and dresses for bridesmaids. In starting a bridal boutique business, having a plan is necessary.

Planning on how much budget you can produce will determine the scope of your business, how many dresses can you produce, the quality of your dresses and accessories. Having a marketing plan is also recommended to gain clients.Another thing to consider is the actual place of the business. The place should be able to cater the needed space to store your dresses, gowns, shoes, and accessories. Also this place should be able to provide a suitable environment for your gowns and dresses to maintain their quality. The place should also have a place to display your dresses, gowns, shoes, and accessories. And also a dressing room should be provided.
Insurance is also a thing to consider in operating this type of business. The insurance policy should be able to protect your dresses, gowns, accessories, and shoes. Shopping around for reputable insurance companies will help you in choosing which company has the insurance policy. Seeking recommendation from owners of the same business is also an option to ensure that the insurance company is reputable since they already have experienced it themselves. But never seek advice from your competitors because instead of them giving you a good advice, it could turn out otherwise. And giving you a good advice is the last thing they want to do unless they want their business to possibly lose clients.
The following are the steps in opening a bridal boutique business:

Find a place suitable for your business. Consult a leasing agency to help you find the right place for your business. Also take into consideration the possibility of renovation in case adjustments are needed so that you will have the best place to operate your business.
After finding the right place, finding the right inventory for your business is the next step. Purchase at least one sample for every dress, gown, shoes, and accessory that you plan to carry. The average price for wedding dresses is usually at $200 to $500 each. Contracting a designer will not only help you with your gowns and dresses but also will give you an advantage over your competitors.
Think about the price of each product you plan to sell or rent. Determine if you want to sell or rent high volume but gain small profit or sell or rent few dresses and gowns but earn big profit. If possible, offer promotions to attract clients.
Obtain a business license from your city hall department. This process takes few weeks to be completed depending on how the city hall operates.
Finally, plan on how you will advertise your business. It is recommended to service a few clients first. Make one client satisfied at a time and let them share their experience to their friends and family because in business, word of mouth is the best form of advertising your business, and the best thing is it is free.

OPEC Plans Another Oil Cut Production

Because of the lowering consumer demand for crude oil due to economic recession, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is planning to cut its oil production from the succeeding months to prevent prices from plummeting.

Meanwhile, oil prices continue to plummet due to overproduction, with supply surpassing the amount demanded by consumers. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will meet on Sunday to discuss another oil cut production measure to prevent prices from plummeting due to overproduction.
Because of economic recession that first started in 2008, the demand for crude oil continues to plummet as consumers spend less money and businesses halt its production. With this condition, oil-producing countries overproduced the supply which resulted to the plummeting price of the crude oil thus resulting to massive profit losses.
OPEC members including Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Angola, Algeria, Equador, and Kuwait said agreements to lower the supply is very important to avoid price weakness.
In a press conference, Saudi Arabia’s oil minister Ali al-Naimi said that output cuts are very important to reduce oversupply since forecasts have predicted that the global economy will continue to shrink.
“We are expecting that oil demand will continue to lower, so we need to cut the supply”, he added.
Meanwhile, other nations are pressuring the organization not to implement another oil-cut measure as this will drive the prices to go higher that may potentially aggravate the global economic recession.
In September 2008, OPEC members have agreed to cut crude oil supply by 4.2 million barrels per day.

If you want to make your retail store attractive to customers, you need to come up with an effective interior design. If you don’t know how to do it, you can hire an expert.

When developing the retail store space, you will need to address issues like where you want to lead customers and how your staff relates to them.Retail Store Interior Design Considerations
A retail business needs to be hospitable and in order to attract a lot of customers you will have to think of the most appropriate interior design for your retail store. If you are not that good with interior design, you can always consult an expert. There are consultant interior designers that you can find who can help you out. When developing the retail store space, you will need to address issues like where you want to lead customers and how your staff relates to them.
The interior design of the store should always lead the customers to one thing – the area where you can generate revenue. You have to lead the customers to the items or merchandise that you’re selling. The way the store’s staff deals with customers may vary and will depend on the type of store that you’re maintaining. You have to train your staff to attend to the needs of the customers. Your staff will need to assist with the merchandise, in the fittings, and in ringing the customers. Make sure that you and your staff provide quality service at all times because if the customers feel cared for, you can close the deal.
Space and Design
Determine the available space in your store. The key elements of the store (e.g. rest rooms, cashier, etc) should be located in the right places. This will lead to a good flow of customers and also, you will need to anticipate for the capacity. The retail store should be optimized both for the staff and for your customers. Try to create adjacent or bubble plans. You can consult a firm or interior designer for this job if you’re not sure how to go about the process. The space in the retail shop should be maximized to avoid creating bottlenecks! Always ensure an ideal, safe, and relaxing environment because this can increase the profitability of the store.
Create a retail store that has considerable impact to customers. The interior design is a very important consideration so you need to give it a big thought. The money that you’re going to pay to the interior designer will still go back to your business in terms profit and a more loyal customer base. Since the competition for retail store is quite tough, you need to excel in your chosen business to succeed. Once you secure the building, hire an interior designer who can help you with the right arrangement of the shop.

When this situation arises, you must be equipped with the proper data concerning restaurant equipment financing. Not all business starters have enough funds to run their businesses. There are still plenty, even if they have enough business capitals, who avail of the possible restaurant business financing sources in their place.
Restaurant Equipment Financing Vitality
In starting a restaurant as business, most part of its success lies in the equipment that will be used. Without the equipment needed, restaurant venture will not become successful. But still, the capital that will be devoted in the business equipment is very high and there is high tendency for the starter in the restaurant business to experience budget shortening. When this condition happens, an entrepreneur must know the possible financing sources that he can maximize. Availing such accessible funding sources will keep the restaurant business running. Thus, there will be actualization of the business plans and goals.
Microloans
The first financing source that a restaurant owner can avail is the so called microloans. This is a type of loan that is available in most of the states in the U.S. The main feature of this business financial assistance is to provide starting capital to those who want to establish their business venture like in starting a restaurant business. The lender of this loan type is usually selecting group of applicants that is composed of seven members. Before they will be granted with the amount intended for the financing of their restaurant equipment for example, they will be required to undergo some trainings and workshops focusing in the proper expenditure of business capital. They are usually asked to repay the microloan amount in a specific span of time.
Federal Funds
Another form of business financing that you can avail just in case you come short of your budget for your restaurant equipment is the federal grants from the government. From the name itself, this is a program formulated by the government in order to help those who want to start their business venture. The main difference of this to microloans is that the federal grants for businesses are free money. This means that the grantee will not be asked to repay the amount that was given to them. But to qualify for this is a challenge to some. Since this is free money, the applicants must pass the set requirements and standards imposed by the government sector that lends the grant.
Business Loans from Banks
Banks are good sources of financing for your restaurant and any other forms of business that need extra source of money. Same as the microloans, the successful applicant of this financial assistance will be asked to pay back the money that was granted to him. Since some of the banks are privately owned, there are different sets of requirements and standards that can be expected.

With your passion for yoga, you will surely find it easy to manage your business and at the same time, you can indulge in your yoga activities.Begin with a Small Investment
Are you into yoga? If you are, then you’ve probably been into yoga studios in your area. If you are not satisfied with their services and you have to passion for managing a business, why don’t you learn how to start a yoga store? It’s not that hard and as long as you have a business plan, you can’t go wrong. Since this is your initial investment, it would be a mistake to splurge your money into the business. You need to start with a small business first and work your way up. For starters, the studio can be 600 – 800 sq ft and the studio can be rented out or it can be your personal property.
Do the demographics. For instance, if you are going to cater to families, it’s not a good idea to choose a space that is next to a bookstore for adults. Industrial parks are no place for yoga stores that caters to the upper class. When choosing the location of the yoga store, it would be best to limit your choices to at least 3 sites so that you can negotiate with the landlords (if you plan to rent out the space) and take advantage of free rent and build in.
Yoga Store Design
The entryway of the store should include the front counter, pro shop, and waiting area for the seats. From the waiting area, the training floor should be visible but there should be a boundary. Your pro shop can sell bottled water, yoga straps, yoga mats, and other essential tools. That way, your customers will no longer go out just in case they need something. You can place the items on racks where your customers can see them. It would be great to have a separate counter for the pro shop and the front counter so entertaining new arrivals.
The decoration of the yoga store is also important. You can paint the store with gold, crimson, or other vibrant colors. It’s up t you to decide on the theme of the shop – you can go for modernistic design or traditional themes. You can also get posters and place them in frames to add to the decoration. Don’t forget to put a restroom and the path to it should not be obstructed. At the beginning, you don’t need dressing rooms but once the store expands, you can now include them in the overall design. You also need to secure a business permit or license to keep things legal.
