Scared Like a Bunny? Hop to It!

Scared Like a Bunny? Hop to It!

Just in time for Easter: I thought I’d talk about being aware of the fears that hold us back.

About four years ago, a good friend and I published a book called Stories Rabbits Tell: A Natural and Cultural History of a Misunderstood Creature. The book, which covered the natural history of both wild and domestic rabbits, as well as the use of rabbits as cultural icons (think Peter, Harvey, Brer, and, yes, both the Easter Rabbit and the Playboy Bunny) received great reviews, sold well on Amazon and the publisher’s website, and garnered my co-author and I a fair amount of attention in rabbit circles.

But there was one thing I couldn’t do: Walk into my local bookstore and say, “Hi, I live here in town and my friend and I wrote this interesting book on rabbits and we were wondering if you might want to carry it. ” I couldn’t even do it during Easter season, when most book stores have whole tables dedicated to bunny books and accessories.

Why? It’s partly because I’m from a long line of small-town New Englanders, who frown on chest thumping. And also I’m a little shy—even though the staff at this book store know me and my family quite well.

Whatever it was, I missed the Easter season at my local bookstore three years in a row, which meant that I missed a) sales; b) a chance for interviews in the local press; and c) an opportunity for local book-selling events.

Not good.

So this year, I said, “enough is enough.” And I grabbed a copy of Stories Rabbits Tell – plus copies of some of the reviews –marched myself into that bookstore and said, yes, “Hi, I live here in town and my friend and I wrote this interesting book about rabbits and we were wondering if you might want to carry it this spring.”

Now understand, my heart was pounding and I had a bad case of butterflies. I was terrified the clerk would say, “pshaw.” But she didn’t. She took my materials, gave them to the buyer, and voila, within a week Stories Rabbits Tell, appeared right there on the shelf.

Moral of the story? We all have tasks that we avoid because we’re fearful. It could be a sales prospect that you’re nervous about calling. It could be a supplier who intimidates you. It could be an employee you put off reprimanding,  a manager you’re afraid to confront, or an inventory mess you just don’t want to sort through.

But to develop business-related emotional intelligence, you need to be able to recognize your fear, understand its consequences (e.g., lost sales or inefficient workers), and then walk through it, so you can do what needs to be done.

This week’s homework: Try to identify one professional task you’re avoiding because you’re afraid. Write down why you’re afraid (i.e., what do you imagine will happen if you attempt this task?) and just how your procrastination is holding you back. Then figure out a way to do what needs to be done. You may have to break the task down into little steps, talk it over with a friend or colleague, or “just do it.” Whatever you need to do, find a way to help yourself get over this one internal hurdle.

(And post a comment about what you end up being able to do!)

First, who

First, who

I ran into a friend of mine at a party last week, a dermatologist who had opened a cold-start practice two years ago. (A “cold-start” practice is one where the physician is new in town, having no significant ties, did not train in area nor live there). He was busy, has added a range of cosmetic and lifestyle services in addition to the mainstay clinical care. What was so interesting was that he had pretty much done it himself, aided by an office manager with unusual skills and talent. His advertising looks professional, has a clear message and a “call to action”, his materials are clean and clear to the reader, and he clearly is reaching people.

How did he do it? He talked about reading Jim Collin’s classic book, “Good to Great”. One of the central themes of the book is “get the right people on the bus, and the wrong people off”. In short, when building your organization, focus on the “who” – the people. Then focus on the “what” you are going to do. My friend found an office manager who also had a flair for marketing and promotion, and she has been invaluable in building the practice.

At the end of World War II, Ford Motor Company hired a group of people dubbed “The Whiz Kids”. This group included future leaders of Ford as Arjay Miller, Robert McNamara (also US Secretary of Defense) and Lee Iacocca. None had auto experience – their bent was management science, and they had worked as a team in the Army Air Force during the war. Their talents were put to use within Ford, first as a group, and then they went on different paths – some rising in the organization, others leaving for other pursuits.

The takeaway here is this: recruiting and hiring are the most important decisions you will make. Spend on ads – too many people become cheap when it comes to placing ads. Use web services, professional organizations and word of mouth – I’ve never understood people who become shy when looking for new talent. Finally, interview thoroughly – have others interview the candidates (one on one), and always bring your best candidate(s) back for at least a second interview.

Has Cupid Struck in Your Workplace?

Has Cupid Struck in Your Workplace?

Raise your hand if you have ever dated someone you worked with.  I see a lot of hands waving in cyberspace.  You are not alone.  I could quote surveys about workplace romance for this entire post.   It’s likely that you read about some this week.  Most recently 39% of respondents to the January 2008 Spherion Workplace Snapshot admitted to a workplace romance.  More employees think workplace romance won’t hurt their career, lots of them turn into marriages and fewer people try to hide the relationship.

The annual reporting of statistics includes comments about the paucity of employer policies covering workplace romance.  Do you really need a policy about workplace romance?  The arguments in favor of these policies say they cut down on favoritism and reduce the likelihood of complaints of sexual harassment.  Some advisors even recommend consensual agreements or “love contracts” that employees sign agreeing that the relationship is consensual and outline what to do if the relationship ends or one party thinks it has turned into sexual harassment.

Raise your hand if you know someone at work who has dated a co-worker and one of them is married, to someone else.  Is one of these people really going to sign a love contract?  I’m pleased to say that many HR professionals see love contracts as an invasion of privacy.  A good policy on sexual harassment that includes strong communication and training is better preventative action.

If it looks like a relationship is resulting in favoritism or other destructive behavior don’t pretend it isn’t happening.  Address the issue by reminding the employees about your policies and telling them the consequences if inappropriate actions or behavior continue.  You don’t have to have written rules about specific behaviors to talk about professionalism and good management.  Summarize the discussion in writing.  Take action even handedly, don’t play favorites.

When romance blossoms at work don’t assume that it will cause trouble.  The Spherion Snapshot tells us that 22% of office romances result in marriage.  With more time at work and changing attitudes this number is likely to increase.

I hope that the only sticky issues you face resulting from workplace romance involve wedding guest lists!

That Ain’t Gonna Work!

That Ain’t Gonna Work!

The results
are in.  The U.S. Department of
Transportation has released the results for the year 2007 and the news isn’t
good.  My first thoughts were of my
Stepfather, Dave.  Why?  Dave is an interesting fellow.  A ham radio enthusiast and IT professional,
you can entertain Dave for weeks at a time with very little more than a
computer, a good monitor, a radio, and an internet connection.  To see this rare bird leave the nest is
pretty rare.  Hell, to see him leave his
workstation is a rare treat all by itself!
When he does venture out beyond the range of his antennas or his
wireless router, he regards the world with a unique set of eyes.  Most notably, he sees what, in his mind, just
“ain’t gonna work.”  It doesn’t
matter what you’re doing at the time, Dave will find a problem with it.  If Dave walks up on you in the kitchen (for
example), and he sees you making chili he’ll ask you, “What are you
doin?”  You put aside your surprise
that he’s standing, live, in the kitchen in the first place and you tell him,
“I’m cutting up some meat to make chili.”  “Well, that ain’t gonna work” he’ll
say, “You gotta cut them pieces up smaller, don’t you know that, Jeanine?  I’ll go back to the computer and find a good
chili recipe.  Then I’ll e-mail it to you
while you’re standing here in the kitchen!”  Whatever works, Dave!

The
“effort” (if you can call it that) made by our domestic airlines is
not good.  Here’s a link
to the story if you’d like to read the details.  The bad numbers are up, the good numbers are
down.  For example during the first five
months of the year, U.S.
airlines could only manage an on-time arrival 74% of the time.  That was the lowest since the DOT started
keeping records!  They also managed to
lose 5.9 bags out of every 1,000 bags checked.
That’s not bad, until you consider that in 2006 that number was only 4.6
out of 1,000 bags.  The most startling
statistic for me was that only 675 complaints in TOTAL were logged during the
month of May.  That month followed a
month that had some of the longest “stranded runway wait times” ever.

How do you
fix it?  You don’t!  You can take steps to make sure your own
experience is a positive one.  Take
earlier flights so you have one to fall back on.  Don’t check bags if you don’t have to.  Learn to pack “small.”  If the airlines cause you be late, even for a
minute, call them and register a
complaint!  Don’t berate them or be
rude just politely call and say, “Hello, you made me 42 minutes to my
meeting today and I don’t appreciate it.
They’ll never fix what they don’t believe to be broken.

So those of
you who don’t travel every day or every week or every month, when you do
finally walk out of your house and into the airport for the first time in a
year… be prepared to shake your heads and say it, “That ain’t gonna
work!”

What to do in Riviera Maya?

Home » Business Ideas » What to do in Riviera Maya?
September 24, 2015 Frank Bullock Business Ideas
If you are by any chance visiting the wonderful Riviera Maya for the first time, prepare for a huge surprise. Pictures do not do this destination justice, as you will soon discover that it is ten times more beautiful when seeing it live. Riviera Maya first impresses tourists through its modern looking resorts. Quickly after travelers have been introduced to luxury, this destination offers them the chance to take part in some rather spectacular tours and trips, sure to make any vacation memorable. If you are wondering what to do in Riviera Maya, here are a few options, three to be more precise.

The Tulum Xtreme Mayan Ruins

This tour brings together all the elements that make Riviera Maya a top holiday destination. When signing up for this tour, you will be able to get a closer look of the impressive ruins of what was once an amazing port. Once you are done exploring Tulum, also known as the Walled City, you begin your journey through the jungle and even discover an underground river.  Imagine swimming and snorkeling in the deep Mayan natural pits, imagine the thrill and the excitement.  Since you will be spending an entire day exploring the Tulum area, you will of course have the chance to taste traditional food.

The incredible Xcaret Park

Adventure enthusiasts should make it their priority to take part in the amazing Xcaret park tour. This is the place where excitement, nature and tradition come together, offering the tourist a one in a lifetime experience. You get to see the natural beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula, known in all parts of the world. The impressive Mayan jungle is waiting for adventurous tourists to show them its beauty. Tradition comes later on in the evening, when all adventures have reached their end and brave tourists are in need of a reward. It is then that traditional music and food take over the Xcaret Park and tourists are offered a show of lights, illustrating the history of Mexico.

Discovering Rio Secreto

This is probably the most surprising tour you could possibly take part in. The Rio Secreto is actually a natural beauty, one that was a secret for a long time, being only recently discovered. Now that the secret is out, tourists from all parts of the world line up to take this marvelous tour. Experience an underground journey and witness the beauty of nature. Make sure you take your bathing suit with you and if you have an underwater camera, definitely bring it along. This certainly is a mind-blowing experience you cannot miss out on.

One of the best things to sell in this world are jewelries. Necklaces are just one of them. With necklaces, you have a chance of earning good money if you sell them wholesale or by the bulk.

What are the things you need to consider when starting such a business? Here are some of them.Jewelries are some of the most precious properties that anyone can have. Just like real estate, the value of jewelry does not depreciate provided that a person takes good care of them. However, taking that aside, jewelries are definitely assets that can do a person good when the time comes. The value they hold are a big help to a person’s personal worth, and something they can use in times of emergency.
Necklaces are a good example of jewelries. They are also the catchiest of the many types of jewelries that are available. They can be seen more easily than a ring, because people tend to hide their hands or they are obscured by things that a person carries. The necklace, however, is seen all the time by the general public.
Jewelries are not only assets, after all. They are food for a person’s vanity. If you are planning a business of wholly selling necklaces, then do so. Curious on how to start one? It is actually very easy to start a necklace wholesale business.
Hire Some Artisans
If you’re going to sell jewelry, you can be sure that you have to create your own designs. You will then be selling these designs wholesale. To do that, you would need to hire the services of skilled artisans that will put your designs into reality. These are people who are better trained and more experienced to sculpt out your designs from precious stone and have them take the form that you have envisioned. They are best for bringing out the beauty that you intend for the jewelries to take.
Maintain a Store or Shop
You would need to start up a store and shop because it is where your jewelries will be stored, and where your artisans would go to work making the jewelries that you are intending to sell. When scouting out an area in which your stop/store will be located, make sure that it is big enough for both and that it is located in an area that is generally secure and safe from thieves. With the value of what you are making being exceptionally high, you would need to ensure the security of your shop and wares.
Have a Website Built
Last but not the least; make sure to maintain a website. That is because you are selling wholesale, and not retail. A website is a very good marketing tool, and through it you can find other resellers around the world that would be willing to buy and resell your jewelry products. With a website, you can easily and quickly make your business global.

Running a concession stand is a profitable business endeavor once you know the requirements and the essential procedures in handling your preferred industry.

However, every business entails deep planning and learning of the fundamentals, therefore, it is crucial for you to read this guide as we give you the pointers in running a concession stand to make it cost-effective and gainful.Running a Concession Stand as a Lucrative Business
The idea of running a concession stand is one of the best options if you have a great passion in serving fast foods to public places where most people have no time to look for eateries or restaurants. As soon as there are many people who treat fast foods as the easiest way to satisfy their hunger or cravings, then this lucrative and money-spinning business will continue to flourish in the industry.
Typically, concession stands are ordinarily can be found in some public places like in local city parks, sport arenas, public beaches and resorts, as well as in large shopping districts where small food vendors are permitted to sell fast foods to the people. But it is not easy to manage a concession stand since you will undergo state laws and local business regulations before you are allowed to open up the business to serve food to the consuming public. When speaking of food, this concerns health issues and the local health departments are very strict in the issuance of food manager’s permit and license. Because of this, concession stand owners should be guided accordingly in order to keep the public protected against food poisoning and other health risks relating to fast foods.
Practical Pointers in Running a Concession Stand
In most cases, concession stand owners are those who have background and experience as short order cooks or those formerly part of a fast food chain since they already learned the ins and outs of the business. Hence, the great passion to serve foods is the important key to be successful on this fruitful business. To guide you well, just follow these practical pointers in running a concession stand.

Location – A concession stand should be located where there’s a big traffic for buyers. Examples of these are near public parks or community playgrounds, sporting venues like soccer field or basketball court, and close to shopping malls. Multiple locations is good unless you can handle all of them.
Mobile vs. Permanent – Permanent concession stands are most common which is stationary in a single location while mobile stands can move from one place to another. Whichever it is permanent or mobile concession stand, the important thing is that you can manage to serve, to store, and to supply your business for its stability in selling fast foods to people.
Menu and Pricing – Menu options must suit on the taste of the consumers and the price must be friendly, too. Competition is a great challenge in concession stand business if you sell wisely and knows what your customers love to eat.

The cost for starting a concession stand will consist of purchasing the equipments (e.g. fryers, ice chest or fridge) plus the processing of permits and licenses. You can contact the local business licensure office and health department for the acquisition of licenses.

In opening an automotive repair shop, you will surely have a strong business despite the recession. You just have to plan carefully for the different aspects of your business.

In times of financial crisis such as today, people are trying to make use of their old stuffs. If their items are already broken or malfunctioning, they are not planning on replacing it just yet. Their best way to go about it is by bringing that item to someone who can fix it and have it working again. They believe that repairs are far more inexpensive than buying a new one. The same thinking is true for car owners.
Cars are not something you can buy out of your change. Normally, when you are to buy a car, you have to apply for a car loan, or go to a surplus car sale shop nearby to buy the second-hand car that fits your budget. You see, cars are really costly. And so, a little problem with the engine doesn’t mean heading the car to the junk yard. It means, bringing the car to an automotive repair shop. With millions of people all over the country owning and driving a car, there is a very small possibility that this business can easily close down. If this is the kind of business you are planning to open for yourself, then start preparing all the needed things for you to operate. Here are the things you need to do in starting an automotive repair shop.

Identify your target market. This means, you must know the financial capabilities of your prospective clients. Surely, you must not expect all of your clients are well-off. That is why, you must also make provisions in your shop to help those individuals who cannot actually afford to buy car parts that are worth more than they can. It is then also wise if you think about re-selling second-hand automotive parts to answer this kind of problem.
Now, that you have identified your target customers, it is now time for you to know where the locations are they would most probably be in. Or better yet, what are the best areas for you to be found as an automotive repair shop? Normally, they would expect you to be around near busy roads or high ways. And the most recommended location for an auto repair shop is in a commercial area and along the road. That way, you can be easily seen by car drivers in case they need your help.
Next, analyze your capabilities and skills in relation to automotive repairs. If you are skilled in this business, then it is really an advantage for you. But if not, it is wise if you would hire a person that is. You wouldn’t want to have your shop be among the mostly complained automotive shop in your location because of lack of mastery regarding repairing of cars. If you can afford it, try hiring a professional technician, mechanist, or engineer so that you have helpful brains in your shop aside from the skilled workers that you have around.
Plan your trademark. In a business where there are so many entrepreneurs who have already gone in the same path as you, it is advisable to create something unique so that the customers can identify you easily through your products and services. Some have tried adding free car wash for every tune-up services. Try to be creative to have that staying power in your hand.
Look for possible suppliers of tools and equipment in your location. It is best if you could make a healthy relationship between you and the supplier to gain yourself and your business the credibility that can take you to places. Also, if you have really analyzed the products of your supplier, then it is easier for you know which supplier gives you the best offer of items and prices.

Are you fond of customizing your home? Do you love everything when it comes to building a home? If so why not start having a home builder business and start earning big? You can start by simply understanding the basic mechanics of constructing and designing a home.

You can practice constructing a small part of your own home, or even your friend’s home and see how it turns out. If it turns out well then that’s good, but if it didn’t you can always try doing it again.Obviously home builder is all about constructing and designing a new home. You need to communicate with some of the architects and designers for them to help you in your planning, and since you are just starting up you need help in everything that you need to learn about home builder. Yes, that is exactly true because people won’t be spending their money to a not so worth it work.
Well to start with your home builder business, you need to learn the basic needs for your business to operate. Here are some of the things you need, to be able to start with your business:

You should know the basic requirement such as a business license for operating a home builder business in your area and other important requirements as well. You should also determine on how you will be distributing your business to your partners and as well as your prospective clients.
The next thing that you should do is determining the number of homes you can build and design in a span of one year. You should also determine the types of clients that you want to work with such as, a client with a specific income level to avoid having financial problems in the long run.
Determine the kind of homes you like to design and build. For instance if you are more focus on building and designing lake homes and city homes, then advertise that you are only specializing in these field of home builder business. Avoid going outside your field of ability for you to not have future problems in the long run. But you can always learn the things that are needed for this kind of industry, for you to broaden your expertise in your business.
Avoid the “know it all attitude” especially if you really don’t know what you are saying. You can ask the help consultants in your network to provide your clients the right and accurate information. In this way you are not giving false hopes and answers. You can also avoid being sued b y your clients.
You should know how to expect the unexpected things. Challenges and barricade are always a part of every business. So don’t give up trying, you can seek help from the experts when your business is experiencing the roller coasters of life.
One thing that inspires clients is by seeing beautiful and creative portfolios that you did. Why don’t you try making a portfolio of one of your favourite designs, for them to see your precious works.
You should have your creations of some of your business materials for your clients to have something choose from such as, countertops, kinds of bricks, exterior siding, windows, flooring and some accustomed designs.
You should know how to help your clients to imagine their home that they would like you to design. Always remember to advise them about the materials that will surely fit their budget, to avoid having problems with money in the future.
Try creating custom homes that have a great appeal to your clients. You can ask for the help of your neigh ors if you can take pictures of their homes and use them in your own portfolio. You can use this portfolio in some home expos or trade shows locally and internationally to get more clients.

Well, starting a business like this is not as easy as it seems. You need to have a lot of perseverance and determination in order for you to continue and be inspired in what you are doing. Yes, they may be obstacles in the way but don’t let them deprived you achieving your dream business.

The Reserve Bank of India can accommodate your business within their country as long as you follow their registration laws. We can show you the right steps in starting a company in India now.The first step in registering a company in India is to have your name approved by the ROC (Registrar of Companies) in the State/Union Territory. This approval is subject to certain conditions, for example, your company name should be unique and there should be no duplicate company name in India at the time of your application. In the case of a public company, the name “Limited” should be included at the end of the company name while for private limited, the term “Private Limited,” must be explicitly included there.

Company in India Business Guide

The ROC in different states primarily manages the following:

Penalty action against companies
Eliminating company names
Alteration of companies from public to private and vice versa
Change of fiscal year
Change of company name
Integration of companies

Fees payable would depend on the company’s nominal capital to be registered and paid either in cash or postal order. The documents and requirements to be submitted should be with ROC within six months of the company’s incorporation. Under domestic law, the companies are required by India to withhold tax from certain payments such as winning from horse races/lottery/games, commission, payments to contractors, professional fee, interest, and salaries paid to employees.Similar ArticlesIndia’s Food Franchising ReportFacts in Business Process Outsourcing in India

Thank you.James expert adviser said on February 25, 2011@Sandesh, it is not a tedious job to register a company in India but it is much cheaper to get this done through a business consultant. They will do this really fast and you will have time in concentrating on other things. Ask your friends and relatives to find a local business consultant.Jestin JamesStartup Biz Hub – Senior Advisor (Staff)Prabhakar said on March 7, 2011i wanna register a event management company so pls help me anyone knows the procedure … (0)77082 30908Raghunath expert adviser said on March 7, 2011@Prabhakar, the process of applying is same as other businesses. If you don’t know the process then follow from here or hire a consultant to complete the work for you. You require about Rs.25,000 to register a company having working capital of 100,000 INR. If you do this by professionals then they will add some fees.Raghunath NatarajanStartup Biz Hub – Advisor (Staff)Dinesh Kumar said on March 10, 2011I am in IT business from the last 5 years, Now i want to register my firm with limited liabilities. it should be either eg.
