My Favorite Websites

My Favorite Websites

There are literally millions of websites out there, sitting in the ether waiting to be read. Most of them aren’t worth their zeros and ones. However, I have found a few great sites out there that I rely on for my day to day. The sites that I will mention here are those that will benefit your ability to communicate in your professional and personal life. These include tech sites for all the latest and greatest in texts and camera phones, etc.

First up is DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com. Now why no one has thought of this before, I don’t know. Having trouble accessing that favored site? Is it them or is it you? Just visit this site, type in the address of the troublesome site in question, and the internet gods will tell you whether the site is experiencing difficulties or if it is, in fact, “just you.”

LifeHacker just won the 2008 bloggie* for best computer or technology weblog. LifeHacker’s tagline touts “Tech tricks, tips and downloads for getting things done” and the site lives up to its claim. This site is loaded with expert tips for handy but little-known shortcuts in everything from Gmail to Windows, product reviews, and DIY techniques for the crafty computer geek.

GeekSugar is a great site for all you technophiles out there who need more cool. Like LifeHacker, there are frequent product reviews and tips for better emailing/texting/modern communicating, but GeekSugar highlights a decidedly more pop and fashion-forward vibe.

If everyone’s new favorite email (Gmail, cough) is also yours, check out the Gmail blog. Here you can find everything you need to make your Gmail experience fruitful, fast, and effective.

*Note: The Bloggies are a real thing. They give out awards annually to the best blogs worldwide and feature categories like Best Entertainment Blog and Best Sports Blog. If you’re looking to for a new favorite website/blog, check out this years winners at 2008.bloggies.com.

California Senate Backs Data Breach Laws

California Senate Backs Data Breach Laws

I was reading today on the Trusted ID Blog that the State Senate in California passed by a large margin measures that require more extensive notification to consumers of data breaches, establish a central reporting center for breaches, and permit local prosecution of identity theft criminals. The bills were both authored by State Senator Joe Simitian who sponsored SB1386, California’s original breach notification law in 2002. SB1386 paved the way for many other state laws regarding data breaches.

SB364 (privacy) mandates that consumers receive a clear, informative notification letter when their personal data has been stolen from a business or public agency. It also requires the state to create a central reporting site to catalog security breaches. SB612 (ID theft prosecution) allows identity theft perpetrators to be prosecuted in the county in which the victim lives. One issue with identity theft prosecution is that most states prosecute in the county where the perpetrator lives. This is usually highly inconvenient for the victim who typically drops the charges due to the inconvenience. Both laws must now be acted on by California’s state assembly.

I’ve given several lectures on Data Breach laws and how to prevent breaches for PCMagCast. The most recent is one I did for Dell, Be Safe, Not Sorry: Protecting Your Data

The major lesson is that it is infinitely cheaper to prevent a data breach than it is to rectify one. I’ve heard all kinds of estimates regarding the cost of notifying customers ranging up to over $10,000 per customer. And that’s not including the damage done to your business from the loss of faith that customers might have as a result of the data breach. While security is a difficult thing to budget for (I wish I had a dollar for every small business owner who said to me, “Why should I spend $1000 on a firewall when we don’t even have a security problem?”), it is certainly a-stitch-in-time-saves-nine kind of situation.

The founders of Unishippers Global Logistics had an idea more than 20 years ago. They took a simple idea and turned it into a solid business model reselling shipping services to small or medium-sized businesses and partnering with major shipping suppliers. The businesses are happy with the discounts they get because they won’t be able to get it by themselves.
Unishippers Global Logistics Business Plan
Unishippers Global Logistics is now one of the largest complete shipping services reseller in the United States. As a franchisee, you need to meet with customers and coordinate with their shipping needs. You don’t actually ship anything; shipping will be done through leading shipping providers in their network such as UPS Freight™, Saia®, YRC™, and UPS®.
The customers will receive substantial discounts depending on their volume contracts and you will provide them with billing, service, and support. You will also receive a part of the sales margin in every transaction. Therefore, it’s a win-win situation.
Unishippers Global Logistics Business Guide
Here is a simple process to purchase a Unishippers Global Logistics Franchise:

Submit the franchise inquiry form – this is the first step in the process. The company’s Franchise Development Representative will give you feedback within 48 hours of receipt of your application.
Preliminary exploration and discussion – if you would have a good agreement with the representative, you need to submit your resume and financial information. It’s a good time to ask your questions and discuss the available markets and opportunities in the program.
Discovery day – once your application is accepted, you need to come to the company’s Support Center located in Salt Lake City. You also need to be exposed to the executives of Unishippers as well as the existing franchise owners and support systems.
Franchise award decision – you will be required to hand over your business plan if you’re one of the fortunate ones recommended for franchise ownership. At this stage, it’s best to complete your market study and review the Franchise Agreement with your legal counsel.
Sign franchise agreement – once the Agreement has been submitted and approved, you need to sign the paperwork and finalize your purchase.
Set-up and training – this is the execution of your franchise agreement. Immediately, you will begin the franchise set-up and complete the extensive training given by the company.

Completing the process of successfully running your Unishippers Global Logistics Franchise would take about four to six weeks. However, the actual time would depend on your own pace.
If you have interest in this business and would like to know more then learn about Freight Logistics as much as possible.

Financing is one of the most frustrating and confusing aspects of starting a franchise business. However, there is one among the popular methods in franchise financing that franchise owners can turn in order to assist financial matters.

They can at least help themselves regarding the issue of money. In this article, one of the best known methods you can learn in financing a franchise is through the SBA Loan. They are loans basically offered by lenders, in particular with banks fully guaranteed by the Small Business Administration of the federal government. They can lend you enough money once you have clearly presented the financing concepts of your franchise. The majority of lenders will likely require you certain requirements to expedite the SBA Loan processing when you apply for SBA Loans. Below are “The Four C’s you need to understand to fully obtain SBA Loans.
Character
First and foremost, lenders would entirely look at your credit history or record to be sure if you are paying bills on time. Have you ever had loans before and repay for them later? One of the best possible ways to handle your credit standing, in terms of character, is to merely get a credit report copy from any lending institution. In today’s highly revolutionized era of computer technology, character still comes as the most important C among the four C’s. For as long as you remain with good credit standing, it’s not difficult for your loan to get approved. Try to go back in the past when you have consequently made several loans to lending institutions. If, in case, you did not pay back your loan, sure it can affect your current standing now that you’re applying for SBA Loans.
Collateral
Apart from character, collateral is second to the four C’s that will be required by lenders in securing your loan. Remember that these assets are collaterally made which can be forfeited if you have failed to pay the loan. SBA Loans actually require that the business franchise will present its assets as collateral. Additional collateral are still required by the SBA Loans like a deposit certificate or home equity.
Capital
In addition, remember that lenders would be interested in giving you a loan once you invested it as a capital for a business. You will likely get approved when you loan 60%, rather than 90% of the whole franchise’s cost. They can also allocate additional capital you can make use of when starting your franchise.
Capacity
The last among the four C’s is the capacity wherein lenders can fully examine your franchise’s ability in repaying the loan. If you have anticipated that the franchise will generate $1500 not less than a month, a bank will be dubious in giving you a loan wherein you need to repay $2000 per month.

Body: Making online website for your business at first maybe hard. However, this doesn’t require you large amount of investment, so you can start with your small capitalization.
Steps in making an online website
Choose a product or services that you want to be engaged with. Before making your website be sure to know what product or services are you going to sell to the people.
Decide what domain name you are going to use. It is advisable to use a domain indicating keyword or keyword phrases of your business or your product and services itself. Try to make brainstorming in making your domain name to come up with the best one.
Make a list of domain names that you preferred and check if which among the names are not taken yet by checking it in the domain registry. Choose the best one that closely fit your products/services so to drive traffic to your website every time customers type the keyword in the search engine.
Design your web pages. If you are not well equipped with this talent, you can pay for this. Give the web page designer your idea of how your page will look like. It is best to have an eye catching design so to encourage your visitors and prospect customers to read more and stay in your site ‘till they are convince to buy your products.
Select a web hosting company. Now that you already come up with naming your domain and designed your web pages it’s time to upload it in the web with the help of a web hosting company. Choose the package that is suitable for your business. If you need large memory for pictures of your products, choose a web host company that offers unlimited memory. You can also add template and design to your web pages using the templates offered by the same hosting company.

This business deals with various clients as the work is suitable for residential, resorts, public places, golf courses and many others. It is a high-paying job and can generate huge profit in just a short time.
Mother Nature had made everything beautiful because of the endless resources. However, there are some places that require the imagination as well as the design skills of a licensed landscape architect. Landscaping is not a simple job and it is not the type of job that anyone can do. If you are interested to break in this field you need to undergo skills training. Once you are armed with knowledge about the job then you can make it as your business. Nevertheless, there are some points to consider before you start this kind of business.
Hone Your Skills
Before you attempt to start the business, assess yourself if you are capable enough of doing the job. Being a licensed landscaper is not enough because you still need to enhance your skills and keep yourself updated with the latest technology. Today there is a modern way of making landscaping design out of scratch by using 3D gardening software. This program will teach you the proper placement of everything in the landscape. Also, the internet has made everything easier as you can upload digital images of landscapes and gives you the options on how to replace the plants for the coming years.
On the other hand, the theories you have learned is not a guarantee that you can perform the job well. The theory will not materialize unless you put it into practice. That is why you need to practice what you have learned by taking a part-time job in a botanical garden or nursery. Likewise, you can volunteer improving the yards of your friends in order to do extra practice. Once you are confident about your skills then proceed to the next step to start a landscape design business.
The next step is to secure all the necessary legal documents in opening a landscaping business. Inquire from the local authority about the licensing regulation. Gather budget for purchasing equipment, supplies and other materials needed in the business. Developing a business plan is important so that you will identify the expenses and at the same time lets you determine the service rate you need to charge. In addition, you should identify your niche market so that you will develop the marketing technique that would attract more clients. There is a plethora of prospect clients and you need not limit your work. Instead, you should expand your market and at the same time deepen your expertise. Referrals would help you build a pool of customers.

How to Save Your Business and Employees from Disasters or Natural Calamities

How to Save Your Business and Employees from Disasters or Natural Calamities
0 10,421 views

In every company and business, it is always important to plan ahead what to do in face of a disaster. This is important to save lives, lives that are valuable and indispensable to your business. How can you come up with an efficient, effective and cost-saving emergency disaster plan? Here are some things to consider.

A disaster is something that not all of us wants to happen, but is something that is beyond our control. No one can foresee exactly when a disaster will happen, but everyone knows that a disaster can happen. This calamity has material adverse effects to everyone, be they rich or poor, person or business. The damage done to business is irreplaceable, but they can be minimized if one has proper business disaster planning and measures put into place.
How can you plan a very effective disaster plan? Here are a few things to remember:

Go around your company building and identify existing emergency exits that employees can use, as well as other exits that can also be used in an emergency. This will be the information from which you will base your plan for organized movement in case of emergency.
When all the emergency exits have been identified, it is now time to start planning the evacuation. Assign these exits to certain departments in order to prevent congestion and pandemonium in the event that an evacuation is to be carried out of your building. These plans should also take into consideration what you can do about your employees that are disabled and physically handicapped.
To test your business disaster plan, you can choose to conduct a fire or earthquake drill every now and then. These drills will embed into your employees the proper procedure to be undertaken so that the procedure goes smoothly when the time comes. Conducting drills also make it possible for you to identify possible weak points so you can reassess and revise your emergency evacuation plan.
To further ensure smooth facilitation of your evacuation plan, assign someone in a single department to handle the evacuation of that individual department. This should be someone who is capable of quick thinking, and should have the capability to keep the people calm during a disaster.
Keep your employees informed about who to contact in case of emergency. Keep every work desk posted with telephone numbers that they can dial if they want to call the police, the fire department, and ambulance departments aside from the usual 911 number. Keep these contact numbers updated as well from time to time.
Remember, the purpose of creating a business disaster plan is the safety of your employees. Do not burden them about making sure their files and paper work are in place before leaving. Do not formulate a business plan with consideration for productivity as it is, as they say, counter-productive.
