Home Depot Foundation Gives Green for Green

Home Depot Foundation Gives Green for Green

The Home Depot Foundation just announced that it will donate $30 million in financial and in-kind support, technical resources and training to establish a foundation of green building expertise for Habitat for Humanity International.

The initiative will provide funding and resources to help make a minimum of 5,000 homes built by Habitat affiliates more energy efficient and sustainable.

The Home Depot Foundation’s Partners in Sustainable Building program will provide energy-efficient and sustainable building resources for approximately 17 percent of single- and multi-family homes built by Habitat over the next five years.

And, reports Habitat for Humanity, building a home to these standards can create significant savings in annual energy bills for families who live in Habitat-built homes.

Well, all stores are not fortunate enough to have foundations, but perhaps there is something your shop can donate to a green cause in your community.

You and your employees could participate in a community-wide clean-up project. If yours is a garden store, you could donate seeds to a community garden. If there are Habitat homes going up in your community, perhaps you could take coffee and doughnuts to the workers one morning. Every little bit helps.

What’s with All the Boobs?

What’s with All the Boobs?

What’s with all the boobs? Imagine how this thought could come up in a business conversation. Could it be a manager at a meeting filled with incompetent people wasting his time? That could be one situation, but it would be wrong. This statement was actually made in a bank. It was an 80-year-old woman who recently said this to her daughter. Her daughter accompanied her mother to a meeting with her banker. The mother was commenting to her executive daughter on the attire of the women bankers and employees with whom she had just done business. All were showing a great deal of cleavage.

I recently delivered a program to executives on persuasion in business. That’s where this conversation was mentioned as an example of an element that impacts persuasion. One of the components of persuasion is credibility. Your appearance directly impacts your credibility. When you are more credible, you are more persuasive. What many people don’t realize is that the people you meet make quick decisions about your credibility just by observing what you wear.

I showed the audience some photos of workers in different attire and asked for some quick judgments. Suits and long sleeves are perceived as more powerful than short sleeved shirts and a skirt. That’s what the audience found. Here’s how it works. When you show more skin, the perception is that you have less power. When you show less skin the perception is that you have more power. Cleavage, obviously falls into the less powerful category. So what were these women at the bank thinking? Who knows.

I’m not much of a prude, but it seems to me in business where we’re working harder than ever, that it’s a good idea to leverage everything you can in your favor. Appearance is just one of those areas. If you think people won’t notice your attire, you’re wrong. If you think they don’t talk you are really out of the loop. I know of one situation where a female executive dresses quite provocatively. (Think see-though blouses.) She often meets with male executives. When this highly visible woman (pun intended) meets with one executive, his assistant will tell her boss that he has a meeting with the stewardess. Any reference to this female executive is met with the assistant miming a flight attendant doing the safety announcement on the airplane and pointing to the exits fore and aft. Could you imagine being so ridiculed without your knowledge in an executive office? Yup. People do talk.

How much effort do you put into the selection of your wardrobe? If it’s not much, you may want to rethink that. You might consider showing less skin. If not, you’re going to have people talking about you. I’ll make a prediction. There will be a lot of executive assistants telling their bosses to enjoy the view.

What can you use a marquee for?

What can you use a marquee for?

Home » Business Ideas » What can you use a marquee for?
May 26, 2016 Frank Bullock Business Ideas
A marquee is generally defined and known as a large tent used for commercial and (or) social purposes, such as events, festivities and other similar activities taking place outdoors. In case you are wondering why such a construction is necessary, you should know that besides the decorative one, marquees have multiple functions: they provide shelter in case of rain or winds, they protect from direct sun exposure and they can also be used to clearly define or separate space. Their history dates back decades and is related to traditional English gardens, as same as conservatories. Initially, the tents had a simpler and more basic design, but since their uses have multiplied, so have their style, shape and materials. While some only consist in some poles and a roof, others are completely closed, thus offering an isolated space, similar to a typical room.

Weddings

Outdoor wedding are amazing, especially if they are taking place in a venue full of vegetation. However, although these happen most of the times during summer, the weather may be unpredictable, so the organisers often have to find a marquee hire South London company. This way, they provide guests shelter in case the weather gets bad, while also ensuring the party can go on outside, in spite of climatic conditions. Marquees come in a wide variety of sizes and designs, so they can be actually elegant and classy, which is why they are the perfect choice for such a special and fancy event.

Urban events and fairs

If you have ever attended a Christmas market in one of the biggest cities in the world, then you probably understand the urban use of marquees. Merchants and even organisers often have these temporary constructions installed, since they are a reliable shelter and also create an isolated space in an outdoor location. Whether they choose to have food stands, small street shops or other type of visitor entertainment points, marquees are a great solution.

Outdoor celebrations

If you are planning a pool party, holiday barbecue, family meal or friends reunion, and you think your back yard is the perfect venue, then you have to have a backup plan, in case the weather gets bad. To this end, a small marquee could be the ideal choice: search for a trusted service provider in your area, ask them about your options and learn about costs and expenses. You will see how having such a construction in your yard for couple of days is actually affordable. What is more, you may even end up wanting one around, for good!

A venue extension

If you own a business such as a restaurant and you want to extend its functionality during the warm season, installing a marquee right next to it is the best and easiest thing to do. The vice versa is also quite convenient: in case you have a terrace which becomes inaccessible as temperatures get low, then you can just cover it up with a marquee and you get a perfectly functional space.
