EQ Tips from Chickens Part II

EQ Tips from Chickens Part II

And now the part you’ve anxiously been waiting for:

Part II of the First-Ever Top Ten Business EQ Tips You Can Learn From Chickens.

(Just to refresh your memory, in Part I we discussed Thinking Outside the Coop, Some People Never Change, and Generally Speaking, the Sky Does Not Fall In.) Today, the tips are:

4) Don’t Muddy Your Own Water

We raised our chicks inside, in a big cardboard box with a heat lamp on it.  Once we moved the hens to the outside, I soon discovered that whenever I put a bowl of water on the ground,  the hens scratch dirt into it. I have a friend who says they do it by mistake, but I swear they want to make mud-pies. Whatever the motivation, the birds wreck their water and then they whine about being thirsty.

Human Lesson: As the saying goes, don’t soil your own nest. Learn the art of “self mastery,” so that you’re not governed by emotional impulses. Be honest, clear (and legal) in your financial matters, so that you don’t get in trouble down the line. Be mindful of your reputation in the community. I.e., don’t engage in fowl play.

5) Be adaptable

 Chicken behavior: See #4, above.

Human Lesson: One of the hallmarks of emotional intelligence is adaptability, or being able to respond to changing conditions, mandates, or information without flipping out—or, conversely, without doing the same old, same old thing in hopes that it will work.  (Definition of insanity: “Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.”) So when the chickens scratched water into their waterer? I moved the waterer onto a shelf in the hen house.

 Problem solved.

6) Mind the pecking order

Chicken behavior: There’s a reason “pecking order” is called “pecking order.” Chickens work out strict hierarchies within their flocks. The bird at the top creates and enforces that order by literally pecking the other birds (and chasing them, mounting them, squawking at them, and, sometimes, scratching them). It’s ugly to watch, but once that order is worked out, life in the poultry yard is fairly serene.

Human lesson: I’m not going to say that we should all obey the chains of command with slavish dedication. But it’s good to be mindful of who’s who and to treat those people with respect. It’s especially good for small business owners – who, as a breed, tend to be independent, even renegade-ish at times – to be mindful of professional hierarchies. Ever seen a freelancer or consultant suddenly turn sullen, churlish, angry or otherwise just kind of wierd? It happens a lot and it’s not all that productive. Be creative, think outside the coop, nourish your entrepreneurial spirit — but learn how to work within the flock, too.

Next Up: Four more EQ lessons to be learned from our feathered friends — including a quote from Henry Ford, who was not, as we all know, a bird brain.

Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread

Because I am Irish myself I suppose I’m a bit partial to soda bread. In
Ireland
its sold all over the country in wonderful hand formed loaves, which are a
tender combination of wheat, oats, sweet butter, a touch of sugar and buttermilk.
The following recipe comes from the small town of Schull where my parents have
lived for almost forty years now and when I come home it’s the first thing I
eat. Soda bread is not unlike a much larger and somewhat denser biscuit. The
key to this bread is not to overwork the dough so as to keep the loaf nice and
tender when it’s finished.

Ingredients

Whole wheat flour                              1 cup

All purpose flour                              2 cups

Sea salt                                       ½
teaspoon

Baking Soda                                    1
teaspoon

Cream of tartar                                ½ teaspoon

Granulated sugar                               ¼ cup (I use
vanilla sugar)

Unsalted butter                                4 tablespoon,
cold

Buttermilk                                     2 cups

Method

Preheat the oven to
400. Grease a 9-inch loaf pan.

In a large stainless
steel bowl mix all of the dry ingredients together. When this is done work in
the butter with your hands or a pastry cutter until all of the butter pieces
are well incorporated and about pea size.

Next add the
buttermilk and gently mix until all ingredients are just incorporated and then
knead the dough until it forms into a well formed round loaf size.

With a knife make a
cross along the top of the loaf, place in prepared loaf pan and bake until
golden brown for about 40 minutes.

How to use promotional products strategically for your small business

How to use promotional products strategically for your small business

Home » Business Consulting » How to use promotional products strategically for your small business
November 28, 2017 Frank Bullock Business Consulting
Promotional products are essential for any type of business, regardless of its size, because they provide various benefits including low-cost marketing, increased brand recognition and customer loyalty, not to mention about their attractive features, namely tactile, versatile, durable and customizable. Whether you choose desk accessories like mugs and calendars, bags, business items like laptop sleeves and address books or clothing, you have the guarantee that your current and potential customers will absolutely love them because they are useful and interesting. These items are common among businesses but you have the chance to test your imagination and bring something new to the table. Furthermore, you should learn how to use promotional products strategically to enjoy maximum efficiency. It would be a shame to let this amazing opportunity of ensuring the success of your small business slip away.

Choose a distribution method

Like any other marketing strategy, planning beforehand is very important, especially taking into account that your campaign involves giveaways that you must acquire somehow. The bright side is that you can find a multitude of websites that customize promotional products. First, you need to establish clear and attainable objectives, such as growing brand reach or informing the public about your products or services. Secondly, you need to explore distribution methods for the promotional materials. Will you give them to guests attending at conferences or trade shows? Will you give them only to loyal customers as a reward or to new customers as a way to capture their attention? Regardless of your choice, receiving free stuff always causes positive reactions. However, making a decision will determine the efficiency of your distribution method.

Details make the difference

Speaking of customizing, you definitely need great design in order to make your brand stand out on the market and ensure its memorability. Do not hesitate to invest in captivating and cheerful patterns. As a small business owner, you probably do not afford this so the best move is to keep it simple and give significant importance to details. Minimalism can also captivate eyes, the main idea is to remain hopeful and always remember: details make a difference. As long as you know the target audience, the process of reaching out to the people should not be very difficult. Communicate with a promotional products supplier if you need help in terms of design, printing and sourcing the necessary materials.

Make your promotional items audience-appropriate

Receiving no response to your promotional campaign is worse than negative publicity and the only way to prevent this from happening is to make sure that all your products are audience-appropriate. You have to be aware that marketing to anyone is almost impossible. Therefore, you must consider your type of business and coordinate your materials with it. For instance, if you function in the technology industry, the most suitable item you can give away is a portable Bluetooth speaker. On the other hand, if you own a hair salon, branded items for hair care make the most sense. Do not neglect this aspect when ordering your products.
