The GHMC was formed in 2007 by the merger of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) with 12 municipalities of Hyderabad, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts, together covering a total area of 650 sq km. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is the urban planning authority of Hyderabad. It was formed in 2008 by expanding the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA).
